The power of essential oils

The Power of Essential oils

July 01, 20225 min read

Essential oils have been used for thousands of years across all cultures from the Egyptians, the Greeks, Romans, Chinese, Indians and Persians. Plants were used to solve all problems as that is what was available. Our world has changed a lot from ancient times and sadly has become more synthetic and toxic. Supermarkets are filled with products that have long lists of synthetic ingredients that are confusing to understand. Health issues abound, whether it is low energy, brain fog, eczema and allergies, digestive problems or anxiety and depression. These issues are usually dealt with by using pharmaceuticals or stimulants like coffee or sugar to keep us going. What if there was a natural solution to addressing health ailments and clearing the toxins from your home? What if there was a natural way to lift your mood and energise you?

I truly believe that everything we need to support our health and well-being can be found in nature. And one of those solutions is Essential oils.

What are essential oils?

Essential oils are small organic compounds that are extracted from parts of plants like flowers, leaves, bark, seeds, stems, roots and resin. They give the plant its aroma, help protect it and help pollination and reproduction. Just as they serve and help the well-being of the plant, they can do this for us too. They are referred to as volatile aromatic compounds as they change quickly from a liquid to a gas, which is why when you open a bottle of essential oil you can smell it strongly. Pure and potent oils will have been extracted with care via distillation or cold pressing and will be rigorously tested to ensure they have no contaminants and illicit the same therapeutic benefits every-time they are used. Essential oils have different properties and can be used to energise, uplift, calm, soothe, cleanse, ground, purify and renew.

How can they benefit you?

Essential oils can be used in many different ways to support your health and well-being.

Helps breathing

Oils like Peppermint, Lemon and Eucalyptus can promote clear breathing and relieve congestion in the sinuses and head.

Skin

Oils like Lavender and Roman Chamomile are great for soothing skin sensitivities. Lavender is great for burns.

Immune system

Many oils have antioxidant benefits thus having a positive effect on the immune system, like Oregano and Thyme.

Cleansing environment

By using oils to clean your home, you remove toxic chemicals and promote a clear and healthy environment for you and your family to live in. The air you breathe will be pure and clean. Lemon and Tea Tree are great oils to add to your cleaning.

Supports Digestion

Peppermint, Fennel and Ginger have long been used to aid digestion and ease any discomfort such as bloating, nausea , motion sickness and cramping.

Restful sleep

Lavender, Roman Chamomile and Bergamot have relaxing and calming properties and help create a restful environment that promotes sleep. When a positive effect is experienced using an oil, the brain remembers it and stores the information. So the next time the oil is used, the body remembers and relaxes through positive association.

Personal Care

Oils have been used through the ages to support the skin, hair and mouth, teeth and gums. Tea tree and Rosemary help nourish the hair and cleanse the scalp, oils such as Sandalwood and Helichrysum soothe skin irritations and promote a healthy complexion. Cinnamon Bark and Clove oils are cleansing and support a healthy mouth and fresh breath.

Muscle aches

Oils can be used to soothe aches and pains and muscular tension. They can also be used before and after exercise to prevent aches. Wintergreen has warming properties whereas Peppermint has cooling properties.

Uplifts mood

The oils are a great way to help with anxiety and depression. Oils such as Wild Orange, Frankincense and Lavender help to lift the mood and create a sense of well-being.

How do you use them?

Aromaticallly

This refers to breathing in the oils either by diffusing them in a diffuser, putting a drop in your hand and rubbing your hands together then inhaling the aroma or inhaling directly from the bottle.

Topically

Using the oils diluted in a carrier oil like fractionated coconut oil, sweet almond oil or another vegetable-based oil and applying it to your body. This helps the oil absorb into the skin and allows you to cover a greater surface area when massaging it in.

Internally

Only pure oils that have been thoroughly tested to ensure no contaminants can be used internally. The label will state if it can be used internally.

Adding a drop to a glass of water or to a vegetable capsule can have wonderful health benefits as the oils enter the bloodstream via the digestive tract and can target the organs and support cellular health.

If you don’t already use essential oils, I would highly recommend you start incorporating them into your daily routine. Next time you want to reach for a cup of coffee to give you an energy boost, rather try inhaling Peppermint, which energises and will give you a natural boost. Instead of using toxic cleaners in your home, try using lemon to wipe surfaces and clean your windows, it cuts through grime and grease and will leave your home smelling amazing. And before bed, why not pop a drop of Lavender on your pillow to prepare you for a wonderful, restful nights sleep. Let nature support you.
