Slowing down time

Slowing down time

June 02, 20203 min read

Do you find your days blending into each other, rushing around, being busy but not feeling like you are accomplishing much? Feeling overwhelmed and flat at the end of each day and then having to rinse and repeat the following day? Do you find it difficult to find time for yourself and all the things you need to do?

This may sound rather strange, but time can be slowed down. Have you ever been so engrossed in doing something you love only to find that time seems to have slowed right down? I usually find that when I go into the day without a plan, I get easily distracted and end up moving from one task to the next trying to be productive but by the end of the day I haven't accomplished as much as I wanted to and feel a bit deflated. On the other hand, when I take the time the night before to plot an idea of what I would like my day to look like, allocating a couple tasks that I know are achievable, I end up having a better day and feel good at the end of it.

It comes down to being Present in the moment. Whatever you are doing, be Present. Still your mind to focus on what you are doing so you can give your full attention to it instead of thinking about all the other things you need to do. When someone is talking to you, really listen. If you are a new Mum, focus on what you are doing with your baby instead of multi tasking and being on your phone. I see this so often, Mums taking their little ones for a walk while they are glued to their phone, missing out on the look of awe on their child's face seeing the leaves sway in the gentle breeze. These moments are precious.

By slowing ourselves down, we slow time and don't feel so overwhelmed by overthinking and overdoing. We can then celebrate at the end of each day for what we have achieved allowing us to feel good, instead of not good enough. Some days you may just need to surrender and accept that you won't achieve much and that's OK. Those kinds of days you may just need to focus on recharging yourself more than anything else.

Some things that may distract us:

  • Checking your phone every time it pings

  • Having notifications turned on

  • Checking email throughout the day

  • Having too much scheduled into your day

  • Other people's dramas

  • Social media

What you can do to stretch time:

  • Have a plan for what you want your day to look like

  • Don't check your phone first thing in the morning

  • Don't jump out of bed and rush into your day, give yourself a few moments to center yourself

  • Be Present

  • Only check email later in the day, you don't have to be accessible 24/7

  • Create time to breathe in your day with regular breaks

  • Don't multitask, do one thing properly and complete it before moving on

  • Self Care - making sure you are looking after your own needs so you don't feel overwhelmed

  • Delegate - you don't need to do everything yourself. Look at what you can delegate and ask for help.

  • Have a digital detox where you switch all your devices off for a period of time

  • Have fun - when you are immersed in something you enjoy doing and are in the zone, time often slows down

It may feel strange at first when you try and slow your life down especially if you are used to going at the speed of a train everyday. Just try one or two of the above suggestions and see what happens. You may be pleasantly surprised. Go at your own pace and above all else be gentle with yourself. You are doing the best you can and that is enough.

What do you want more time for in your life ?
